The Stotlar Drug Co. has been a family-owned mainstay in Pinckneyville since 1932. Jo Stotlar moved from his hometown of Herrin to join his brother, Louis Stotlar, in operating the store. Louis ultimately returned to Herrin leaving Jo as the sole proprietor.
Jo attended the School of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois and took post-graduate studies in pharmacy at the University of Michigan.
The original Stotlar Drug store was located on Walnut St. just south of the current one. It was moved to its present location at 1 N. Walnut St. in 1964. In addition to serving the pharmaceutical needs of Pinckneyville, Jo operated a full service soda fountain were hand-scooped milkshakes, sundaes and slushes were favorites with the townsfolk.
After Jo died in 1959 ownership of the store was passed along to sons Drs. Gene Stotlar and Jim Stotlar. The brothers incorporated the business. Jo’s grandchildren, Tom Rich, Bill and Barb Stotlar now own and operate it.
